Reaction to Sochi 2014 Opening Ceremony Blunder

Sochi welcomed the World with an incredible opening ceremony from the Fisht Olympic Stadium. However, many reactions on social media quickly turned to the Olympic Rings fail, which set social networkers abuzz, yet again.

Five snowflakes were intended to open up into five Olympic rings suspended above the Stadium. However, eyebrows were soon raised with only four Olympic rings and then a snowflake. It didn't take long to realize that it was a hilarious malfunction.

Those Twitter accounts... Within seconds a "Sochi fails" account was set up, with a great Tweet to take advantage of the Opening Ceremony mishap:

There was plenty more on social media, but let's turn our attention. The malfunction was non-existent in Russia, so while the rest of the World laughed, Russians were oblivious.

As the footage of the rings fail was shown, officials switched to pre-recorded and rehearsed footage of the rings successfully opening. This move was defended by the International Olympic Committee, meaning they justified the laughs of us while Russia didn't know a thing.

Hoaxes, more prominent by the day on social media, played their part in the fail. A completely bogus report suggested that the technician responsible, Boris Avdeyev, was found dead in a hotel room:

“Although his body was badly mangled and the wounds were consistent with a struggle, so far officials say they don't suspect foul play. Sure there were stab wounds and bruises all over the body, but who knows what caused them. Maybe he tripped and fell on a set of knives. Right now we’re ruling this an accidental death," stated the false report.

Don't worry, the report was completely false, Boris Avdeyev is fine. Just another hoax, courtesy of the Internet.

Four rings and a snowflake, an iconic symbol that was reportedly immortalized on t-shirts in China. Whether it is true or not is another question, but pretty cool regardless.

It's (probably) fortunate for technicians that Vladmir Putin saw five rings...

That could have overshadowed the ceremony, but it was still a spectacular display to welcome the World to Russia, setting up for a magnificent Winter Olympics.
