Saturday Night's Boxing Action: Floyd Mayweather Returns, Klitschko Still On Top

It was a big night in the boxing World on Saturday 4th May, that featured a returning Floyd Mayweather putting on a show in Vegas, and Klitschko performing well in his home nation of Germany.

It was a dominating display by Wladmir Klitschko that saw him retain his numerous World Heavyweight Championships against Francesco Pianeta. Klitschko's victory came 2:52 into Round 6, when he won by knockout, just one of a few times when he had Pianeta down. But there was no doubt that Klitschko could have knocked him out much earlier in the bout, but he took his time, and patiently dismantled Pianeta.
Hardly any boxing fan expected Pianeta to do well, but it was a dream crushed for Pianeta, who may have thought he had a chance. David Haye described Klitschko's peformance as very 'business-like' saying he wanted to have breaks between rounds, so his advertisements could show and he would get more money. Effective, yet not exciting was the verdict. But despite any criticism coming off this fight, Klitschko may have more money coming into his pocket, with huge fights still to come. He continues to defy age, and remains undefeated for over 9 years. His dominance in the division was further illustrated, when his team struggled to find room to put all the belts on him. Klitschko victorious in Germany, and quite simply, no other outcome was an expectation.

Floyd Mayweather went the distance with Robert Guerrero and won by decision for his 44th career victory. It was an electric atmosphere in the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, as Floyd Mayweather returned to the ring. The bout was of course much less one-sided than that of Klitschko's fight, but it was a boxing masterclass by Floyd Mayweather. Guerrero put up a decent effort to fight, but it was to no avail, as Mayweather outclassed  him throughout the fight. The doubt soon wore off, many thought that Mayweather would struggle with ring rust, and be a changed man after serving a prison sentence. This was however not to be the case, as Mayweather was "quick and slick" described by his very own opponent. Mayweather pocketed over £20 million from the fight, but he wanted the knockout for the fans but could not get it. And with Mayweather's victory, the speculation comes again. He is booked for five fights following this for the next 30 months, who will be his next opponent? Will they be able to topple the greatest in the World?

An interesting night of boxing, there are still some great fights to come in May. As we speculate the future of two aging stars Klitschko and Mayweather, we also look forward of the war that is to come in London, England on 25 May, when Carl Froch and Mikel Kessler collide.
